Good Afternoon!
This will be the first wrap up style communication that will be sent out after each Program Feature is completed. Wins, Learning Opportunities, and Growth. Typically a Program Feature will last 4-8 weeks depending on the depth of the topic.
For those of you who were not able to enjoy the last few weeks of Troop Meetings, the scouts had a great time learning Fire Starting and Fire Building (yes they are two different skills). Our experienced scouts did a fantastic job of teaching the new scouts the various tips and tricks to practicing safe fire building. They started a few weeks back with just Flint & Steel or other manual fire starters. This past week, they were all able to start a fire and build it up enough to burn through a string 18 inches above the pit. Every group was able to this in under 8 minutes. We’ll see how much they retain at the December Campout during the Scout-Off on Saturday. Each Scout (as long as they were present) has now earned their Fireman Chit and most of the Star & Life scouts were able to fulfill their E.D.G.E. requirements.
You should be able to see a pattern emerging over time with your scout. Learn a skill, demonstrate the skill, teach the skill, lead the event. Each is a stepping stone to the next.
Starting next week, the PLC has selected First Aid as our next Deep Dive topic. There is a District-Wide First Aid Challenge in January which the scouts want to participate in. There will be a traveling trophy for the winner for each year. First Aid will likely take us through November. The PLC will be using https://troopleader.scouting.org/program-feature-first-aid/ as a guide and template to help the Troop Meetings stay on topic and fun. Please share this resource with your scout.
First Aid Merit Badge Counselors – Brush up! The Senior Patrol Leader or other PLC members will be coming to you to help teach a 10-15 group session before breaking into patrols for practical hands on experience.
I’m here if you need anything,
Jason
